An award-winning actor with a career spanning both screen and stage, Brian Cox CBE is one of Dundee’s most famous bairns and is widely recognised as one of the finest actors of his generation.
Brian began his acting journey just over five minutes from here, at Dundee Repertory Theatre—fondly known as the Dundee Rep to locals—in 1961.
His breakthrough Hollywood role came in 1986’s Manhunter, and since then, he has appeared in acclaimed films such as Braveheart, Adaptation, The Bourne Identity, Troy, 25th Hour, and X2: X-Men United. He is also renowned for his iconic portrayal of the beloved Dundee character Bob Servant.
In the last few years, he has received worldwide recognition for his compelling portrayal of Logan Roy, the formidable patriarch at the heart of HBO’s Succession. His performance earned him a Golden Globe, an Emmy nomination, and widespread critical acclaim for its depth and gravitas.
Despite his success on the global stage, Brian has never forgotten his roots. He frequently speaks of how his upbringing in Dundee instilled in him resilience, humility, and a deep love for storytelling—values that continue to inspire his work today. His unwavering support for his hometown—whether through charitable initiatives or embodying the Scottish spirit of perseverance and creativity—serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of staying true to where we come from, no matter how far our talents may carry us.
