Accommodation help for Parents and Carers.

It's a busy time in their lives, and also a bit scary. Leaving home for the first time, and starting university is a huge step. So your child might need your help to get their accommodation sorted out.

Let's face it, they've got a lot to do and think about right now.

Here's a quick guide covering your most essential questions, plus we have lots of FAQs you can read as well.

I wanted to take the time to write to express my thanks for the support we have received for my son who will be starting at Abertay this year...The staff member was efficient, professional but also warm, understanding, knowledgeable and caring and made the experience of potentially moving away from home less stressful...We truly appreciate that way in which we have been supported.  Thank you letter from a parent, 2021

How many Halls are there? Where are they?

All this information and more is on the student halls and rooms page.

They are all 10 minutes (or less!) walk away from our campus.

How much is the rent?

It depends on the length of the lease. Here are the current rent prices.

Can I apply/pay rent for my student?

All our halls are privately owned, so how to pay and when depends on them. Check their websites on the student rooms and halls page.

Do we need to pay a deposit?

This depends on the hall your child chooses. Some ask for a deposit or a booking fee, others need a month's rent in advance.

How long is the lease?

This depends on the residence they choose, and how long they decide to stay.

Are there any bills on top of the rent?

Most bills are included in the rent – gas, electricity, heating, water, basic insurance and wifi. If they watch TV on any device, they will need a TV licence. Students in Halls don’t need to pay council tax.

Do you provide food?

None of the halls provide catered accommodation, so they will need to sort out their own food.

There are supermarkets close to all our Halls, and many cafes, restaurants and takeaways nearby. Don't worry, they won’t starve!

Living at home v student accommodation

Many students at Abertay are local and live at home. But even some local students choose to live away from home and halls can be a good way to do that.

Apart from the costs, there are pros and cons which you and your child need to consider if living away from home is an option.

The UniGuide has a great article about it.
