Non-Abertay Students and Staff

Joining the Library if you're not an Abertay University student

We welcome visitors to the Bernard King Library and offer a range of membership schemes (see below) that provide access to our printed resources, which you can explore using LibrarySearch.

Unfortunately, we’re unable to provide access to our electronic resources (databases, eJournals, eBooks etc) as these are acquired under licence for exclusive use of current Abertay University staff and students.

Retired members of Abertay staff

Retired staff can join the library with their National Entitlement Card and borrow up to six books in our four-week loan category. Bring your card to SEZ on Level One of the library, and you can normally borrow straight away.

Students and staff from other universities

You may join free of charge and borrow up to six books in our four-week loan category by completing the online SCONUL Access application, which will be authorised by your own library. Bring your authorisation email to SEZ on Level One, together with your staff or student ID card and complete the Abertay library application form.

Wifi access is available via Eduroam.

Students and staff from local colleges

We have reciprocal arrangements with the following local colleges: Fife, Dundee and Angus, Perth College UHI, and SRUC Elmwood Campus. You may join free of charge. Bring your staff or student ID to SEZ on Level One of the library, complete an application form, and you can normally borrow straight away.

School pupils and teachers

All S5 and S6 pupils and staff of secondary schools in Tayside may join and use the library for free.  Please bring your Young Scot card/National Entitlement card with you.

We also welcome class and group visits to the library, which includes hands on instruction from our librarians during April-June and December. We can offer a range of short visits of around 1- 1.5 hours to help with a class assignment or general understanding of the use of the library. Just contact us at library@abertay.ac.uk to discuss your needs.

NHS Tayside staff

You may join the library free of charge. Please fill in the application form and bring your NHS staff card and an additional photographic ID (driving licence, passport)

Members of the public

You’re welcome to use the library on weekdays between 8am and 5pm for reference and study purposes, without any charge or membership. However, if you’d like to borrow items from our stock and/or would like access to the building in the evenings and weekends, you’ll need to become a member of the library.

If you have a National Entitlement card, you may borrow items free of charge. Please bring your card to SEZ and complete the application form. SEZ are based next to the main entrance of the library building.

If you don’t have a National Entitlement card, our subscription rates are £12.50 for six months or £25.00 for 12 months. Please come to the Support Enquiry Zone (SEZ) on Level One of the library. You'll need photographic ID and proof of your address such as a driving licence, utility bill, passport etc.
