Your role is one of support throughout the process of your student applying to university, waiting on their results, and helping them if things don't go to plan.
Knowing the best way to support your student is so important.
Results day can be emotional, and your student may be nervous. However, it's important you stay calm and reassure them. You know them best and they'll appreciate any help and support you can give them to help make the right decision.
Stay calm. Results day nerves are contagious in both directions. A composed adult is the most useful thing in the room.
Help them prepare, don't do it for them. Universities want to speak to the applicant, not a parent. Help them gather their grades and UCAS ID, then let them make the call.
Make a shortlist together. Two or three courses, a first choice and a backup. Research before results day, not on the day.
Be ready for a quick decision. Offers can come within hours. Talk through what they'd say yes to in advance, so the moment isn't a panic.
Know the practical bits. Accommodation, funding and travel are often the things that stall a decision. Skim our accommodation and funding pages so you can answer the 'but how would it actually work' questions.
