"My degree was vital for me to secure my job, an Abertay degree helped me stand out due to gaining real world experience during my studies."Cameron Sale | Area Manager, Aldi | BA (Hons) Business Management
I applied to Abertay through clearing, I had heard that it was a great university for student satisfaction, and it turned out to be a fantastic choice, I couldn’t recommend it enough. Part of the reason I chose Abertay was due to having more personal interactions within lectures, you feel comfortable to ask for guidance, everyone there has time for you. My lasting impression is positive, I look back on my time fondly, I wouldn’t have been able to achieve the position I have if it weren’t for Abertay.
The Business Management degree gives you a broad understanding of everything that is interlinked in business. You cover a mixture of different modules; marketing, finance, and HR, this not only allows you to gain understanding of all these areas but also helps you realise what your passions are within that. A course highlight for me was the work placement modules, gaining real life experience with modules that linked to real life scenarios makes the learning engaging and enjoyable. Having lecturers such as Angus Brodie really made the course as engaging and interesting as possible. He really inspired me to go out and achieve what I have. The extra opportunities that Abertay provides further assisted in my success. In particular, the career mentoring scheme, without my participation in this, I don’t think I would be where I am. My mentor, Nicola Brown, helped me plan my CV, look at where I wanted to go, and assisted me with applications, she was key in helping me set up my future after graduation.
I am currently an Area Manager at Aldi; my role involves overseeing the day-to-day operations of 5 stores. It is very target driven, but also people oriented. I have store managers reporting directly to me, we have weekly meetings, and I provide guidance on what they need to succeed, I am also a personnel leader to their direct reports, over 150 colleagues across the stores looking to me for advice if anything is going wrong. There are tough conversions that happen, but also great ones, this is something I love about my role that you get to make connections with people. It can be challenging; you don’t achieve positive results unless you have motivated staff that are engaged and happy.
My degree was vital in me securing my job, an Abertay degree helped me stand out due to gaining real world experience during my studies. This gave me a lot to talk about in interviews, I used this to sell myself to people, and it helped me prepare for my role due to studying a mixture of different subjects and modules. There are things I learned in classes at Abertay that I still use to this day.
