"My degree allowed me to grow professionally gaining knowledge and applying this to projects and my career now. If it wasn’t for the opportunities that I had at Abertay, I wouldn’t be where I am now."Antonio Martínez Beltrán | Research Analyst, McKinsey & Company | BA (Hons) Business Management
One thing I really enjoyed about Abertay is that it is small and community like. The lecturers and staff know you by name, they are really dedicated to providing a positive university experience in all aspects. Being an international student, it was nerve-racking going to a different country for my studies, but the staff are so helpful, SEZ was very welcoming and had a solution for any issues I had, this made my experience a lot better.
The Business Management course at Abertay opened a wide perspective of the world of business, from marketing, finance and accounting and even cultural differences when operating in international markets. Abertay offers interesting modules as well as sport societies and volunteering opportunities. The learning system at Abertay is very beneficial, you get a lot of opportunities for practical work, which ensures that you understand and know how to apply what you learn. In class you are encouraged to share your thoughts, I had some larger classes which were more challenging, but most were small, very enjoyable and participative.
The facilities available are fantastic, especially help from the careers service. They supported me with writing my CV, which enabled me to participate in the Santander Employability Scheme. They also informed me of the career mentoring scheme, where I was partnered with businessman and Abertay Alumnus, Barry Fitzpatrick, he shared his knowledge and expertise with me and really helped me with planning life after graduation. I ended up working for his start up once I finished my studies, gaining experience I didn’t have before.
Abertay gives you so many opportunities for different things, I had the opportunity to be a study abroad student at George Mason University in the USA, this experience opened my mind up to so many things, and it allowed me to overcome fear and be more confident. I was able to be an international student advisor, where I could help students who wanted to study in the US, reflecting on my own experience.
As an international student at first there was culture shock and home sickness, however Abertay creates a welcoming environment. They have events where you can connect with other international students, I would recommend getting together with them and supporting each other, as we are all in the same boat. It is also important to take all the opportunities that are presented to you and join a sports club or do volunteering. You need to make the most of it, Dundee is small but has lots to offer, great restaurants and activities.
I am currently working for McKinsey & Company as a research analyst; I help clients make longer lasting impacts and overcome difficult situations. I run analysis of different business topics in different industries. I provide professional advice; consulting is about providing the best independent perspective. We have offices across many countries, my job can be challenging but you learn a lot, and I would like to continue growing and working in consulting. My degree allowed me to grow professionally gaining knowledge and applying this to projects and my career now. If it wasn’t for the opportunities that I had at Abertay, I wouldn’t be where I am now.
