What does your current job involve?

I am the Marketing Manager at Henderson Loggie, an independent Scottish accountancy firm.

I started as the Marketing & Events Administrator after graduating in 2016, before working my way up to Marketing Executive in 2018 and then to Marketing Manager in 2021. 

I work with the firm's management team to implement our service & sector teams' marketing plans. I'm also involved in many other areas of marketing within the business, such as lead generation, graphic & web design, social media advertising, event sponsorship, internal training and more.

As a Manager, I also work closely with the Digital Marketing Assistant to support them in their role and help them progress with the firm. Watching them develop their skills, exceed their targets and grow confidence is hugely rewarding.

How important was your Abertay degree in helping you pursue your career?

Massively important. I knew when I left school that I had a passion for marketing, but didn’t really have any grasp on what was involved or know all of the different aspects of marketing. My course at Abertay gave me that knowledge and also the opportunity to learn a wider skill-set from modules like business strategy, accountancy and business law. 

What advice would you give to our students?

Don’t be afraid to ask for help, especially in your final year. Doing a dissertation was really stressful. I wanted to try and do it all by myself, but once I’d reached out to my supervisor for feedback I had a much clearer plan of what I wanted to achieve. I then knew that they were there to help if I came up against something I was unsure of. 

In terms of looking for a job; start applying for graduate programmes as soon as you start forth year. You can never start looking too early and it takes a lot longer than you think to find something. The last thing you want is to be stressing about the dissertation deadline and knowing that you need to apply for jobs at the same time.

Finally - and I can’t stress this one enough - make sure you have an up to date LinkedIn profile. That’s how I ended up getting my job with Henderson Loggie.

What was your most memorable moment as a student?

That’s a hard question as I have some many great memories from being a student and met so many amazing people during my time at Abertay. Although it was my last memory as a student, I’d have to say the graduation ceremony and grad ball with all of my friends. Knowing that all of the hard work paid off and being able to celebrate together was a great feeling and one that I’ll never forget.

What are your lasting impressions of Abertay and Dundee?

Abertay was a great university to study at and I think it really benefits from having small class sizes as you really get to know your lecturers. I felt like they really cared about how you were getting on and wanted to give feedback. That makes it much easier to ask for help when you need it.

In terms of Dundee, it’s a fantastic city to be a student and has a great nightlife. With everything that is happening with the waterfront project I know Dundee will thrive for many years to come and I’ll be back to visit as much as I can!
