Andrea Cameron is the Dean of the School of Applied Sciences and the Intellectual Lead for Teaching and Learning. She was the first National Teaching Fellow at Abertay University and was one of the first recipients of the award in Scotland in 2018. Andrea is also a Principal Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and has progressed a number of student experience enhancement issues in the various roles she's had at Abertay since joining in 2003. She has led on a series of strategic initiatives for the university - most recently in relation to Employability, Academic Tutoring, Embedding Equality and Diversity in the Curriculum, Staff Profiling and Accelerated Degrees.
She maintains an active role in the classroom and is module leader for the 2nd year sport placement module. She has presented and published work in relation to Personal Development Planning, professional reflective practice and heightening employability, receiving a Special Recognition Award for her work with Active Schools. She has also been the recipient of several Student-Led Teaching Awards for her work in relation to enhancing opportunities for students. Before becoming a sport scientist, Andrea was, and remains, a registered nurse teacher. She continues to produce patient publications for a Diabetes charity. Andrea’s interests in heightening skills, competency and employability in graduates derive from her clinical nurse teaching experiences. Andrea is also a mother of one and an accomplished athlete, representing Scotland and England at long distance track events as well as cross-country.
Currently Andrea is module leader for the second year ‘Work Placement’ module and co-ordinates the second year sport student placements. This module focuses specifically on enabling the students to make links between theory and practice through placement experiences, but also involve students delivering practical sessions to community groups and presenting a Linked-In webfolio to showcase skills and experiences. Students are required to update their Personal Development Plans throughout the module and to evaluate their experiences, in order that they can start to operate as Reflective Practitioners. Andrea has published and presented on interventions to enhance student employability skills and has been a winner and runner-up in the Student-led Teaching Awards Best Platform for employability category.
Previously Andrea has taught in the areas of Fitness Assessment and Exercise Prescription, Health Promotion,Nutrition and Health, Research Methods and Exercise Physiology and continues to run mobile workshops and laboratory based practicals as part of Dundee Science Festival as well as for senior school groups.
Andrea’s current research interests lie in the domain of heightening skills, competency and employability in graduates deriving from her clinical nurse teaching experiences.
She has previously presented and published work in relation to Personal Development Planning, developing the Reflective Practitioner, and employability initiatives, including ‘Clients in the Classroom’. She has completed research in the area of physical activity measurement and Type 2 Diabetes, as well as examining the knowledge and practices of primary care staff in delivering physical activity promotion information to patients. She has been involved in Retention and Progression Higher Education projects, and has presented on issues of reasonable adjustment, disability and differentiated performance.
She also continues to produce patient publications for the charity, the Diabetes Wellness Research Foundation on Exercise and Diabetes.
