Biography

I’m a Sociologist and Lecturer with many years of experience in teaching.

I joined the Abertay University in 1995 following a brief career in mainstream teaching.

My research interests are focused on the sociology of political culture and the media. I’m concerned principally with narratives and discourses of politics, conflict and war, and more generally with the social production of these as myth and propaganda.

I also have a broad interest in British and American cultural history and popular culture, and a longstanding interest in the American captivity narrative.

Interests

My research interests are primarily in the sociology of political culture and the media, and are concerned principally with narratives and discourses of politics, conflict and war, and more broadly with the social production of these as myth and propaganda. I am very happy to consider student projects and dissertations on representation and discourse with respect to television and newspapers, cinema, films and games. I am interested in war, conflict and society, have a broad interest in British and American cultural history and popular culture, and popular culture genres; and a long stadning interest in the American captivity carrative. I am currently researching the uses and construction of politcal myths in the British tabloid press using the methodological tooklits developed by critical discourse analysis (CDA).
