Biography
I am Senior Lecturer in Sports Coaching and Sport Science. Underpinning my professional position, I am a Chartered Psychologist, Chartered Scientist, BASES Accredited Sport and Exercise Scientist, a NSCA Certified Strength & Conditioning Specialist, a UKAD Accredited Advisor, and a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.
My research interests are around sports coaching and coach education. I have focused on interpersonal perceptions and factors that influence these, for example empathy in coaching and how gender influences the way individuals are perceived. I also have a keen interest in strength athletics such as Strongman, CrossFit, Weightlifting, Powerlifting and Highland Games.
I have previously worked with a range of sport and health organisations such Dundee United FC, Edinburgh Biotech, and Mountaineering Scotland. I have also provided academic support and curriculum quality review to a variety of institutions such as The Open University, Oxford Brookes University, The University of Cumbria, Charles Sturt University, The University of Hertfordshire and Edinburgh Napier University. I am currently a Funding Bid Assessor for the Carnegie Trust.
Before joining Abertay in 2008, I carried out my doctoral research at Loughborough University. This work explored the development of empathic accuracy in coach-athlete relationships. Alongside this I completed postgraduate and undergraduate qualifications at the University of Edinburgh, the Open University, and Edinburgh Napier University.
