My research concerns the sociology of economic life, personal finance and consumption, with a particular emphasis on consumption perceived as risky, addictive or problematic.
My most recent work has examined UK government policy concerning financial capability (Marron 2014) and Anglo-American discursive constructions of credit and debt in the 20th and 21st centuries (Marron 2015). I have also sought to develop of a new, distinctive sociological framework for the understanding of cigarette consumption (Marron 2016).
I am currently writing up a paper examining the phenomenon of self-help in relation to tobacco cessation with a particular focus on the Easyway method associated with stop smoking guru Allen Carr. I am also in the process of preparing a book proposal that will seek to examine how tobacco consumption has come to be problematized and governed through discourses of addiction and harm, the policing of risk in space and place and the state regulation of the market for tobacco.
