Researcher Development

The University is committed to all three principles of the Concordat to Support the Career Development of Researchers. We recognise the importance of supporting researchers to carry out excellent research with real world impact.

We can help you to reach your full potential

The ability to constantly evolve and develop discipline-specific and technical skills is key to being an effective, flexible and independent researcher. By harnessing leadership attributes and using both critical thinking and creativity, a good researcher will be well positioned to make a significant impact in their chosen field, whether that’s working collaboratively with fellow academics or engaging with external practitioners and industry.

Opportunities for academic researchers and postgraduate students

Academic researchers and postgraduate students have access to around 100 discipline-specific, advanced and higher-level generic researcher development opportunities, training workshops and seminars booked through our online Events Calendar. Examples include, grant writing workshops, research methods and statistics courses, academic writing, public engagement and research impact, enterprise training and competitions, understanding Intellectual Property and copyright, teaching in Higher Education, training for research supervisors, and a research leadership programme.

As well as these and discipline-specific and technical training, postgraduate students can access classes delivered as part of our undergraduate and postgraduate teaching – an excellent way to brush up on skills, learn something new or fill a gap in background knowledge and understanding. Postgraduates can tailor their professional development training to their specific needs and career aspirations. The Graduate School also offers one-to-one support with research design and statistics, publishing and grant writing, the development of enterprise bids, and public engagement events.

Researchers can map their professional development against the national Vitae Researcher Development Framework, and as a postgraduate student or researcher, you can communicate with the Abertay Research Community through the social media tool ARC Yammer.
