Through the Esports society I made friends who have become a strong support system and will stay in touch beyond universityMax Clow | Abertay University | BSc (Hons) Computing
When Max first started studying at Abertay, he initially found it difficult to make friends in class due to being older than most of his peers. Then the pandemic hit which made things even more difficult. As means to meet new people, Max explored joining one of Abertay’s online student societies. The decision to join the Esports society proved to be a game-changer for Max.
The Esports society had its own Discord server exclusively for members, which made it easy for Max to quickly become part of the group. Since Max had previous experience with Esports and a competitive personality, joining the society felt like a perfect fit. Moreover, the team-based nature of Esports games made it easier for him to connect with others and provided a platform for conversations and building relationships.
He said:
“The society was crucial in helping me find friends at the University in a way that felt comfortable for me. Through the Esports society I made friends who have become a strong support system and will stay in touch beyond university. The society also offered me an escape from stress and heavy workloads, providing a few hours each week to compete at a high level, which greatly benefited my mental health.”
The society consists of teams for various Esports games, which compete in national tournaments against other universities across the UK. These tournaments involve two matches each week for approximately two months. In a huge achievement, the society's "A" team finished 4th out of over 120 teams from across the country.
Max loved his time in the society so much that in his third year, he decided to run for the position of President, and he was elected to lead the society. He believes this experience has played a vital role in his personal growth, enhancing his leadership abilities, organisational skills, and teamwork capabilities, all of which will benefit him in his future career.
In September, Max will embark on a new chapter as a Technology Consultant at EY, one of the largest professional services organisations in the world. Although he may have less time to play Esports, he will always treasure the memories and camaraderie experienced during his time in the Esports society at Abertay.
