I loved the relationship I had with the psychology and counselling staff. They really helped me to achieve the goals I had set for myself and believed in me.Mairi Aitchison | Abertay University | BSc (Hons) Psychology and Counselling
Mairi started studying at Abertay at the age of 28 seeking a fresh start and a more fulfilling career. She had originally studied at another university upon leaving high school but soon decided that the time wasn’t right for her, and she discontinued her studies.
Initially, Mairi had reservations about returning to education, fearing the perceived pressure she would face. However, she soon discovered that the life experience she gained during her time away from formal education actually equipped her well for university, finding that her ability to connect with others was greatly enhanced.
Throughout her studies, Mairi actively pursued volunteering and work experience opportunities, even working part-time as a research assistant for her tutors, Professor Vera Kempe and Dr Janet MacLean. Mairi believes that these experiences have been invaluable in preparing her for the workforce, equipping her with practical skills and valuable insights that will greatly benefit her future career.
She said:
“I loved the relationships I had with the psychology and counselling staff. They really helped me to achieve the goals I had set for myself and believed in me. Without them, I wouldn't have had the confidence to overcome challenges and reach my full potential.”
Mairi's academic success at Abertay has led her to be accepted into Oxford University to study Psychodynamic Counselling in October. This incredible opportunity highlights Mairi's dedication to her education, paving the way for a promising future in the psychology profession.
