Loui Burns

Loui embarked on her journey at Abertay driven by a desire for a career change. She was a part of the SWAP programme - a partnership between colleges and universities in the east of Scotland dedicated to providing support and access to higher education for adults who may have been out of education for an extended period.

Starting her Biomedical Science programme at Abertay in 2019, Loui faced a series of challenges. Initial adjustments to remote work due to Covid-19 were just the beginning. She also took on the demanding role of a full-time caregiver for her grandmother who has battled dementia for over two decades. Despite these difficulties, the most significant hurdle arose in August 2022 when Loui received a diagnosis of Multiple Sclerosis, a mere three weeks before the beginning of her fourth year at Abertay.

Despite these challenges, Loui completed her coursework with determination and resilience, showcasing her unwavering commitment to her studies. Her proudest achievement was securing a clinical placement at Ninewells hospital, which helped her complete her IBMS registration portfolio. Being part of a supportive community of students and staff at Abertay proved to be a fulfilling experience, with the University's incredible support systems playing a crucial role.

Despite facing health challenges in the past year, Loui recently began her role as a Biomedical Scientist at St Johns Hospital in Livingston (NHS Lothian), a testament to her resilience and determination.
