The AHEAD programme was a stepping stone that made me realise Abertay was the right choice for meAnne Everett-Ogston | Abertay University | BSc (Hons) Mental Health Nursing
Anne’s journey with Abertay began when she attended an on-campus gaming event along with her husband. The warm and inviting atmosphere, coupled with the friendliness of everyone she encountered, left a lasting impression.
She soon learned about the AHEAD programme and how it is designed to help people get back to education and decided to give it a try. The programme provided Anne with the core academic and study skills necessary to succeed at university, including how to write an essay, how to reference, and how to use various library services. Moreover, participating in AHEAD not only boosted her confidence but she also made friends for life.
She said:
The AHEAD programme was a stepping stone that made me realise Abertay University was the right choice for me. Because I had been out of education for so long, I had doubts about whether university was for me and if it was too late to pursue it. But the AHEAD programme was transformative, showing me I not only had what it takes to succeed at university but to thrive.
During her time at Abertay, Anne thrived thanks to the support and encouragement of her lecturers. In her final year, she was awarded the Sarah Fletcher Memorial Award which is given to a final-year BSc Mental Health Nursing student who has demonstrated compassion at the core of their professional practice.
Following graduation, Anne now works at Hope Point, a new community crisis centre in Dundee that supports people experiencing emotional distress.
My experience at Abertay has been life-changing. I now have a very rewarding career that enables me to make a meaningful impact by supporting those in need. To prospective students hesitant about university like I was, I'd encourage them to embrace the transformative potential of higher education. Even if it seems daunting, university can unlock doors you never knew existed!
