"You are graduating from a well-respected institution – embrace the opportunities that come your way."Steven Traynor | Robertson Group | Framework Manager
I lead a team of six people who are responsible for delivering a Construction Framework worth almost £1bn. This statement in itself is significant and it involves co-ordinating a variety of things within our business. This includes client engagement, commercial management, pre-construction management, performance management and, ultimately, client satisfaction. My job is varied, engaging and challenging with an excellent work/life balance.
I had a role as a Design Engineer in Dundee before joining a major national building contractor as a Site Engineer. I was proud to be part of the team that delivered some impressive projects, none more so than Marischal College in Aberdeen – the second largest granite façade in the world.
My career took a positive turn not long after when I was made Business Development Manager for Scotland. Being part of the regional management structure before I was 30 years old was too good an opportunity to turn down. My skillset developed during this period and I made the role my own. In 2017, I joined Robertson Group as Framework Manager. The best thing about it is working for an exceptional employer in an industry that I know and love. I have an excellent team and a career plan mapped out in front of me to develop my skills further.
If you study at Abertay, you will be graduating from a well-respected institution – embrace the opportunities that come your way. There will be many, especially if you have worked hard. Listen to your mentors in the industry, have that thirst for knowledge, don’t be afraid to make mistakes but learn from them. First and foremost, enjoy it. Your career is what you make of it.
