"Abertay is very future focused and very current. The degrees on offer are really relevant."Rebecca Fitchet | Angus Soft Fruits | Technical and Compliance Manager
The course I did was very varied. It showed you a lot of the different things you can do with a degree in food. The 12-week placement in third year was definitely worth it. You were able to say what it is you wanted to do and you’d get suitable options. I got to see what it was like in the industry and it helped a lot. The University itself is very future focused and very current. The degrees on offer are really relevant.
The friends I ended up making have had a lasting impact on me. The people who were on my course are all doing very different things. Some work in teaching while others are also working in the food industry. It’s a great degree to be able to do.
Angus Soft Fruits supply major supermarkets with raspberries, strawberries, blackberries, blueberries and cherries. We’re a year-round company and I’m part of the UK technical team.
I help manage the Technical function of five packing sites and oversee quality of fruit at a share of around 20 growers across Angus, Fife and Perthshire. We spend our mornings on field taking a look at the quality of the fruit being picked and providing our customers with what they need. I also make sure our hygiene and worker welfare standards are being enforced. It’s very busy and very full on!
During my third year I did a placement at Kettle Produce, they’re a vegetable supplier for major supermarkets. Abertay helped with that. I came across the Angus Soft Fruits job one day and applied for it. I was very lucky.
