Kristen McEwan

Kristen joined Abertay from college and has now secured her dream job in the mental health field

The support of my lecturers was a game-changer for me. They provided a sense of belonging and understood me and my struggles, which was invaluable.
Kristen McEwan | Abertay University | BSc (Hons) Psychology and Counselling

Kristen’s journey to success was not without its challenges. At the age of 16, she dropped out of school due to poor mental health. However, with the help of therapy and a pre-college course, she was able to gain the necessary qualifications to pursue higher education.

After completing college, Kristen applied to Abertay to pursue a degree in Psychology and Counselling. Her inspiration came from the support she received during her own struggles, which fuelled her passion for helping others.

At university, Kristen faced various challenges, including a family bereavement. However, she remained focused thanks to the support of her lecturers.

Kristen said:

The University's Counselling team was equally instrumental in helping me navigate the challenges of university life and overcome my mental health struggles. Their guidance and support gave me the confidence to push through difficult times and thrive.

Through her university experience, Kristen developed a strong sense of purpose and passion for helping others. She used her personal experiences to inform her studies and applied her skills in real-world settings. Her volunteer work with Fife Women's Aid and the Kingdom Abuse Survivors Project allowed her to develop active listening skills, empathy, and effective communication.

Kristen added:

I’ve learned that reaching out for help when needed is crucial, and I’ve been able to use my experiences to inform my own learning. Developing strong support systems, both academic and personal, is really important too. Never giving up on goals, even when faced with adversity, is also a key lesson I’ve learned at university.

Looking ahead, Kristen has secured a position as a Mental Health and Wellbeing worker at Penumbra Hope Point in Dundee. Her time at Abertay has given her the confidence to excel in this role, using her knowledge and skills to make a positive impact, and she hopes to inspire others who may be facing similar challenges to keep pushing forward and never lose sight of their goals.
