Compliance status

This website is partially compliant with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) version 2.1 AA standard, due to the non-compliances listed below.

Non-accessible content

Non-compliance with the accessibility regulations

  • Images: Some images are missing text alternatives (WCAG 1.1.1).

  • Videos: Some videos do not have captions or transcripts (WCAG 1.2.2, 1.2.3).

  • Headings: Some pages have missing or illogical heading structures (WCAG 1.3.1).

  • Forms: Some labels, instructions and placeholder text are missing or unclear (WCAG 3.3.2, 4.1.2).

  • iFrames: Some embedded videos are missing titles (WCAG 4.1.2).

  • Colour contrast: Insufficient contrast in headings, carousel controls and some form text (WCAG 1.4.3, 1.4.11).

  • Bypass blocks: No consistent way to skip repeated navigation (WCAG 2.4.1).

We are addressing these issues in phases during 2025–26 as part of our ongoing accessibility improvement plan.

Disproportionate burden

We are not currently claiming disproportionate burden for any accessibility problems.

Content outside the scope of the regulations

  • Maps: 3D and floorplan maps are unlikely to be fully accessible, but maps are outside the scope of the regulations. Assistance is available in person if required.

  • Legacy PDFs and documents: Documents published before 23 September 2018 that are not essential to services are exempt. Essential documents are being remediated or replaced with accessible formats.

What we’re doing to improve accessibility

  • Redesigning page layouts and templates to remove systemic accessibility issues.

  • Using automated tools (Siteimprove, Axe, Lighthouse) and manual testing to review content regularly.

  • Training content creators on accessible content production.

  • Feeding back accessibility issues to third-party suppliers.

  • Participating in sector accessibility forums (GDS, JISC, UK HE).
