Learn to design and interrogate AI systems with a clear understanding of human behaviour. As more organisations automate and move services online, there’s growing demand for people who understand both Artificial Intelligence (AI) and User Experience (UX).
We’re the first UK university to offer an MSc that brings together AI, UX research and applied psychology in one programme. Alongside a thorough grounding in data and AI techniques, you’ll explore theoretical concepts and test them in practice.
You’ll learn how to:
Apply psychology and AI principles when you design and evaluate systems.
Enrich AI solutions through robust UX research and interaction design.
Use data, AI and applied psychology to inform and iterate prototypes.
You’ll also examine the ethical responsibilities that come with developing AI applications, and what “responsible” human-centred AI looks like in real products and services.
This MSc is deliberately practical, with projects, group work and – where possible – work placements, so you graduate with a portfolio of evidence as well as a degree.
When you graduate, you’ll have a solid grounding in Data and AI techniques along with specialist knowledge and skills in Psychology and UX. Our aim is to create the next generation of AI talent, who recognise the role of human behaviour in technology use. Both the UK and Scottish Governments have urgently called for an increase in Data and AI skills, and the need for talented AI professionals at all levels is growing every year.
Check out Keeley and Veronika's stories - both graduated from the MSc Applied AI and UX in 2023 and were recipients of the DataLab Scholarship.
Full-time on-campus students complete the degree in one year (three terms, with the Master’s project in term 3). Part-time students normally study over two years (two terms in year one, three in year two, with the project in the final term).
The Master’s project is an independent research project under guidance of supervisors.
Across the programme you’ll typically:
Build foundations in AI, data science, UX and applied psychology – learning core methods, tools and frameworks.
Go deeper into advanced topics such as machine learning, human–AI interaction and experimental design, working on team-based projects.
Complete an independent Master’s project, often linked to an industry or research partner, where you apply what you’ve learned to a substantial AI/UX problem.
Full details of individual modules are listed in the Modules tab.
Most modules are assessed through practice-based coursework – project work, student-led presentations and workplace-simulation group projects. Some modules use a mixture of coursework and formal examination.
AI and UX: Strongly practice-based, making use of assessment by project and professional discussions.
Data science: Lab-based practicals and workplace simulation group project.
Psychology modules: Assessed through project-based work, with emphasis on research design and analyses.
Lectures introduce key concepts, theories and techniques. Tutorials and lab sessions deepen your understanding and build confidence with tools and methods. Throughout the course you’ll be expected to contribute actively to group work, discussions, seminars and independent study.
The taught course will be assessed using a combination of written coursework, presentations, examinations and portfolios, with a written dissertation at MSc level.
Choosing the right master’s is about both fit and eligibility.
We normally look for at least a 2:2 honours degree in a relevant subject. We’ll also consider applicants from other backgrounds who can demonstrate strong quantitative or technical skills and a clear interest in AI, data and user experience, and we may take relevant professional experience in areas such as software development, UX, data analysis or related fields into account.
Use the UK and International entry tabs to check the qualifications we accept, then use your application to tell us about any coding, UX or digital projects you’ve undertaken and any relevant work experience.
Applicants should have a minimum of a lower second-class (2:2) honours degree in Anatomy & Physiology, Biology and Biological Sciences, Chemistry, Computing, Engineering, Game Design, Maths, Physics or Psychology (i.e. Physical, Natural, Life, Biological or Psychological Sciences). The course is designed for students with some experience of scripting.
Applicants who did not cover the appropriate subjects during their degree will be considered if they have relevant industry experience.
Please note: this course will run over 16 months full-time and 28 months part-time if you begin your studies in January.
Postgraduate study is a significant investment, so it’s important to understand the full picture.
The tuition fees you’ll pay and the funding available depend on factors such as your nationality, location, personal circumstances and the course you’re studying. If you’re studying a postgraduate taught (PGT) degree, your fee status will be classed as one of the following:
Scotland
England, Wales, Northern Ireland, and the Republic of Ireland
International
Your fee status is typically based on the country where you’ve lived on a regular, non-temporary basis for the three years prior to the start of your course.
We’ll confirm your tuition fees once you’ve applied.
International includes applicants from EU countries who do not hold Pre-Settled or Settled Status in the UK. (Students from the Republic of Ireland are not included.)
