Equality Impact Assessments

The University has a legal duty under the Equality Act 2010 (Specific Duties) (Scotland) Regulations 2012 to assess the impact of our proposed, new or revised policies and practices – subject to relevance and proportionality – with regard to the need to:

  • eliminate discrimination, harassment and victimisation
  • advance equality of opportunity
  • foster good relations between people who share a relevant protected characteristic and people who do not share it.

An Equality Impact Assessment (EqIA) is a method that uses evidence to ensure our policies, practices and decisions are fair and inclusive and helps the University avoid barriers to participation or disadvantage to protected groups.

Equality Impact Assessment Guidance

Academic - EqIAs related to our taught programmes, including assessment, curriculum development, good academic practice, timetabling and more.

Corporate Strategy, Planning and Reporting - EqIAs related to high-level strategic planning governance, including the University Strategy, Faculty and Services plans.

Estates, Campus Facilities and Environmental Sustainability - EqIAs related to the University’s environment management, facilities, safety and security, and space planning.

Finance - EqIAs related to  financial resources, including asset management, charitable donations, expenses and claims and budget management.

Health and Safety - EqIAs related the measures and controls through which the University aims to provide a safe and healthy environment.

Information Governance - EqIAs related to  the measures and controls over our use of personal data and access to information and management of University records and cybersecurity.

Information Technology - EqIAs related the standards for establishing, monitoring and maintaining information technology, such as website development and network connection.

Research and Research Degrees - EqIAs related to research policies and guidance around conduct and ethics, quality assurance of research, promoting research outputs in useable forms, and more.

Staff - EqIAs related to  staff management and employee support including recruitment, learning and development, performance and conduct, equality and diversity, health and wellbeing, pay and benefits, and more.

Student Support - EqIAs related to welfare and support services for all matriculated students, including careers guidance and resources, disability support, emotional support, mental health and visa advice.

University Governance - EqIAs related to the mechanisms by which the University will be directed and controlled, including the structures of the Court and Senate along with other oversight operations.
