Dál Riada

This project investigated the uses of colour theory, shape language and lighting to explore how these theories affect a younger target audience, all whilst briefly considering child psychology. This was explored to figure out how best to convey information about characters and environments and influence the mood and perception of the player or viewer.

To explore this, I created a collection of 2D concept art for environments, character and props for a game that would be set in Kilmartin Glen in the early medieval period in the kingdom of Dal Riata. All of the designs draw on the various theories I looked into and are inspired by visual motifs I found throughout my research into the historical kingdom. The game would allow the player to explore a medieval fantasy version of Kilmartin Glen, meeting folklore creatures and discovering the real ancient ruins, learning about both whilst they play.

Project Motivation

To improve my own understanding of the areas or colour theory, shape language and lighting as well as to draw more attention to what is a fairly unknown but vastly interesting historical location
