Synopsis
In a world where spirits and monsters roam the earth among humans, you stumble upon a serene lakeside manor with a secret hidden beyond its walls… Inspired by Chinese fantasy, folklore and cultural elements, this project explores how cultural authenticity can be retained in 3D game art when representing traditional Chinese culture in a fantasy video game setting. This original 3D environment is populated by traditional Chinese architecture, scenery, and props, designed to tell a narrative loosely inspired by Legend of the White Snake, one of China’s Four Great Folktales. The goal of the project is to find a balance between historical accuracy and creative liberty to create a scene that “feels” authentically Chinese in a fantasy game world.

'Serpent's Call: Representing Chinese Cultural Authenticity through 3D Environment Art' is a 2023 Digital Graduate Show project by Linda Vet, a Computer Arts student at Abertay University.
Project Motivation
This project takes inspiration from various world-famous video games based on folklore and mythology. While there are many successful video game titles that promote elements from regional cultures to a global audience, there are very few titles of similar scale based solely on Chinese culture. I am personally fascinated with the rich history and culture of my homeland which heavily inspired my past art projects. I think there are some very interesting stories to be discovered here, so I am motivated to dive deeper into the subject and present them to a larger audience through game art.
