ATHLETICA: A Study on Character Design and its Importance in Female Representation in Games

“ATHLETICA: A Study on Character Design and its Importance in Female Representation in Games” is a 2021 Digital Graduate Show project by Jena Summer Reid, a Computer Arts student at Abertay University.

Synopsis

The aim of this project is to present a rich and diverse representation of female video game characters in the form of 3D modelled, game-ready characters made for a hypothetical Multiplayer Online Battle Arena (MOBA) game. The characters I’ve created represent different minorities and also battle the oversexualisation of female characters which can be seen throughout many games today.

Regarding the ideas for character design, I took the theme of sport and mixed this with team-fighting elements. For example, the ribbon dancer would be a utility or support character by using her ribbons as hooks or traps. These characters would fight in teams like in League of Legends or Overwatch.

I have taken a feminist approach to my character designs focusing on showcasing a strong representation of women all over the globe. I hope this will increase the number of young girls and women taking an interest in and playing video games.
