“How Computer Vision can be Utilized Within a Game to Improve Speech Therapy for the Elderly ” is a 2020 Digital Graduate Show project by Jamie Bankhead, a Computer Game Applications Development student at Abertay University.

Synopsis

For people suffering from stroke, Parkinson’s Disease, or one of many illnesses/issues that cause problems with the voice, speech therapy can be essential for improving their quality of life. Unfortunately, as with any physical therapy routines, they can be boring, and adherence can be poor. With gamification techniques we can turn the speech therapy routines into fun playable exercises which encourage adherence, improve technique and make the experience enjoyable.

The game is a series of minigames, each replicating a common exercise for speech therapy. Using Computer Vision, we can gamify exercises which utilize your facial muscles, allowing one of the minigames to be played solely with facial muscles whilst the other two utilize the loudness and pitch of the voice. These games are based on researched exercises but have been altered to fit in with a games format.
