Flawless Flower: Inducing Flow through Game Design

The Flow State or ‘The Zone’ is a specific mental state of full immersion and focus on the task at hand. In short, it's the state of mind of optimal performance. One becomes so immersed in an activity that the task becomes spontaneous, automatic and effortless. It’s most frequently observed in extreme sports and creative arts, though most of us have experienced it at some point in our lifetime. As a result of the Flow State, many experience inner happiness and fulfilment due to their ‘supernatural’ achievement.

This project is called ‘Flawless Flower’ and it aims to build an experiential gaming model in an attempt to encompass an ideal game environment to induce the Flow State. A polished game demo will serve to present optimal practical design elements.

Flawless Flower: Inducing Flow through Game Design

This project investigates, defines, and explores the methods and techniques used globally to induce the Flow State, and incorporates the findings into the game design process.

Motivation

I've always been fascinated by the Flow State and it's always been for me the reason why I love videogames more than any other medium or hobby.
