"Conveying Character Traits through Visual Design and Animation" is a 2022 Digital Graduate Show project by Jack Litster-Campbell, a Games Design and Production student at Abertay University.

Synopsis

With the increasing popularity of the open-world videogame genre, the player character can often spend large amounts of time alone, without any interaction or dialogue with non-playable characters. Therefore, it is important that this character is able to convey their personality and physical traits purely by how they look and how they move. This project examines how the theory of semiotics can be used to improve upon character design and animation techniques, with the goal of creating a character that has easily identifiable traits. The project followed game industry standard character art pipelines, from initial concept sketches to a final in-game 3D model, to determine how these techniques can be applied when creating digital characters for videogames.
