Telling Engaging Narratives with Strong Atmosphere

The main question of my project is to investigate whether current games - which typically lean toward an exposition centric delivery of narrative - are correct in using this method, or can environmental narratives be told as well as, or better, than expository narratives? I intend to answer this question by exploring how deep an environmental narrative can be, by researching how to send narrative information most effectively to the viewer and considering the best ways in which mood and emotion can be conveyed through atmosphere.

Telling Engaging Narratives with Strong Atmosphere

Investigating how environmental storytelling can be used to deliver an engaging narrative and strong atmosphere, as well as to determine how complex the narrative and its characters could be.

'Telling Engaging Narratives with Strong Atmosphere' is a 2023 Digital Graduate Show project by Harry Lamprey, a Computer Arts student at Abertay University.

Project Motivation

Throughout my academic career I've had a passion for creating interesting game environments, whether they're historically based or grown from fandoms of games. This time I've been strongly influenced by Noir Cinema. I want to explore how concentrating on established artistry can expand my knowledge and benefit the games industry.
