Exploring The Wellbeing of a Macho Noir Detective

The classic tough-talking, street-smart investigator archetype of characters is brought to us by noir films of the 1940s and their inspirations - the hard-boiled stories of the 1930s. These characters portrayed certain aspects of masculinity and showcased damaged well-being. This project aims to explore the relationship between these aspects of masculinity and the well-being of the noir detectives. It creates a story using narrative design principles, such as the monomyth and three-act structure, to portray this relationship. It also takes inspiration from existing media to create a method of using well-being as a game mechanic.

Project Motivation

Over the years there has been a rise in the representation of men's mental health and wellbeing. I wanted to join this cause and understand how masculinity and being male relates to one's wellbeing. I wanted to learn about why and how certain aspects of masculinity could affect an individuals wellbeing. I thought that if I mix this information by making a game, I would be able to create something that I find to be interesting and meaningful.
