Design for Accessibility in 2020-2021

“Design for Accessibility in 2020-2021” is a 2021 Digital Graduate Show project by Filippo Casola, a Games Design and Production student at Abertay University.

Synopsis

Everyone should be able to play games.

My project is a game prototype designed with accessibility in mind. Only recently have AAA games started to incorporate substantial accessibility features, and the issue of accessibility has been extremely relevant recently with many people stuck in a pandemic-induced lockdown. I believe that video games provide a level of escapism and that they can play an important part in a person’s well-being.

This project aims to raise awareness about accessibility options and how they can help mitigate impairments. The goal is to create an example of an inclusive and accessible game by tackling the four main areas of impairment: cognitive, visual, hearing and motor. For each of these, I created at least three accessibility options to mitigate part of the impairments, making the game enjoyable and inclusive to a broader audience. As an example, to mitigate the cognitive impairment of Dyslexia, I added an option that gives the possibility to change the font of the game from “Roboto” to the Dyslexic friendly font ‘OpenDyslexic’.

Design for Accessibility in 2020-2021

This project focusses on the implementation of accessibility features through software-based solutions baked within video games, rather than relying on third-party software.

Motivation

I suffer from tinnitus and my brother is dyslexic. We both had to adapt to games rather than games adapting to our needs. Accessibility should be the standard, yet rarely is talked about and taught.
