Using Motion Graphic Design to Enhance Book Illustration

For this project I wanted to create a motion graphic eBook full of illustrations. My aim was to explore motion graphics in digital books in more detail. I would do this by producing an eBook that includes digital illustrations, along with motion graphics for the story '20,000 Leagues Under the Sea', aimed at Sci-Fi book collectors. This project takes inspiration from the illustration motion capture work done for Kindle in Motion eBooks (such as the Harry Potter Franchise) and the motion comics done by Marvel and DC. I also looked at illustrators from the 19th century, along with poster designs from the 1960s. I’ve always been a fan of Sci-Fi books and enjoy collector’s editions that come with extra illustrations. I wanted to use my Honours project to take collector’s editions a step further through the medium of eBooks.

Project Motivation

The motivation behind this project was to test what I've learned over the last few years of my studies. I'm also a fan of Sci-Fi and Fantasy books, so I thought about doing a project involving book illustration. I wanted to take the idea of book illustration further by introducing motion graphics to the images - something that would be interesting but doesn't take too much away from the reading experience.
