Investigating the Creation of Real-World Inspired Environments for Games

“Investigating the Creation of Real-World Inspired Environments for Games” is a 2021 Digital Graduate Show project by Claire Monaghan, a Computer Arts student at Abertay University.

Synopsis

This project looks at game environments that are based on or inspired by real-life places, and how these environments are researched and created for games. Modularity was a strong focus in this project as I aimed to imitate industry standard pipelines and techniques in creating an evocative Scottish-inspired scene. My goal was to develop my skills as an environment artist, creating a nicely composed scene within the constricts of games.

Investigating the Creation of Real-World Inspired Environments for Games

Exploring the techniques used to research and build real-life inspired environments for games, before recreating a Scottish-inspired street environment with the same processes.

Motivation

As someone who grew up in Urban Scotland, I have noticed it is not a place I see shown often in games, despite Scotland's contributions to the gaming industry. This prompted me to look further into games that were inspired by real-life places and the creation process behind them, which then led me on to creating my own scene inspired by urban Scotland.
