Amber Baillie

Ovak Runevile Figure

Synopsis

My project is designing and sculpting a high-fantasy strong female character while breaking away from the more skimpy or hyper-sexualised designs that are commonplace within the genre. I've created a Dungeons and Dragons party member, Ovak Vilerune the half-orc paladin, for my honours project. I also plan to expand the project by working on the rest of the campaign's party members following my graduation which will be posted on my social media, and my portfolio on Cara.

What motivated you to develop/create this project?

This last year was my first time playing D&D, and I was inspired to sculpt the badass women in our party. For my honours project, I chose to design and sculpt our party's paladin, Ovak Vilerune, as a way to refine my hard surface modelling and texturing skills. I wanted to create a powerful female character in high fantasy, breaking away from the more commonly seen skimpy or hyper-sexualised designs.

What has been a highlight of your time at Abertay?

Discovering and learning more about digital sculpting. Prior to my studies at abertay, I'd been studying illustration and traditional painting. However, since discovering digital sculpting, I've ignited a passion for creating again and I have loved learning this new way to create, alongside workflows and techniques. I've learned to love creating again, after facing severe artistic burnout in my 2D work following my college course. Now I know what I want to pursue professionally, and have met wonderful peers throughout my time at Abertay to learn and grow alongside.

What are your hopes and future ambitions for after graduation?

Getting a job as a 3D character artist in the games industry.
