20 Years of Games: Events

20 Years of Games

Abertay Digital Graduate Show

More than 170 final year students filled all five floors of the Student Centre to display a unique blend of digital art, computer games, cyber security innovation and more. The work included concept art linked to a device that turns mobile phones into virtual reality handsets, software that can transmit from space and a chillingly realistic AAA game that sees players attempt to escape from a locked room.

ADGS also acted as a lunch event for Dundee's Ignite Festival, which shone a spotlight on culture across the city.

Game Changers Exhibition

Housed in the Hannah Maclure Centre on the top floor of the Student Centre, the Game Changers Exhibition celebrated the achievements of our alumni. From designers to character artists, these Alumni have achieved great success in a diverse range of professional settings, including world-renowned Triple-A studios.

Many have forged careers all over the world, but some have remained in Dundee to create companies within one of the UK's most vibrant games hubs.

Games Pecha Kucha

On May 6, a packed audience witnessed a fascinating evening in the company of the world's premier computer games creators, who returned to Abertay to present quick-fire talks. The event saw speakers show 20 images, each for no more than 20 seconds, as they shared experiences and journeys since graduating or collaborating with Abertay.

Speakers included Liam Wong - Art Director, Ubisoft, Danny Parker – Head of Mobile Technology, Ninja Kiwi, Timea Tabori – Engine Programmer, Rockstar North, Jess Hider – European Community Manager, Unreal Engine, Brian Lawson – Senior Games Designer, Reagent Games.

20 Greatest Games

Staff and students at Abertay were asked to vote for the 20 Greatest Games with links to the University. Over the last two decades, our graduates, academics and industry partners have been involved in a string of the world's top games. The most popular game was announced on Friday, December 15 after a week-long ‘World Cup of Games’, where fans were asked to vote for their favourite on Twitter.

Games Tournament

The bragging rights of Dundee's gaming scene were at stake during a Street Fighter V tournament in September. Organised in partnership with THIS Festival - a four-day celebration of all things computer games in Dundee - cash prizes were on offer as teams of three battled it out on the big screen in front of a large audience (in the room and online).

Finale: Next Level - A Conversation on the Future of Games

Rounding off the packed 20 Years of Games programme, our very own Dr Kenny McAlpine hosted a discussion on where the games industry is heading. A stellar panel of gaming luminaries joined Kenny, including Lemmings and GTA creator, Dave Jones; CEO of UKIE, Dr Jo Twist OBE; Abertay lecturer Lynn Parker; CEO of Playmob and Abertay graduate, Jude Ower OBE and games journalist, Will Freeman.

Many of the 300-strong audience had the opportunity to question the panel and the event was streamed live on Facebook.
