Counselling & Mental Health Statement of Service

Counselling is an opportunity to discuss and explore issues that concern you.  This is in the company of someone who offers you time and space to reflect, be heard and not judged and supported.  It is not advice.  A counsellor will not tell you what you should do, but instead, will work with you to find ways of coping with your difficulties or issues.  Our Service is available to all regardless of racial origin, gender, sexuality nationality, disability, age and cultural or religious beliefs.

What Abertay Students can expect from the Counselling and Mental Health Service

Students and graduates can expect the Counselling and Mental Health Service to provide:

  • Individual counselling appointments.

  • Individual appointments with our mental health advisor for students with a diagnosis of moderate to severe mental health difficulties.

  • Emergency on the day appointments.

  • A comprehensive website, which delivers information and relevant links effectively.

  • A series of workshops on topics such as mindfulness, procrastination, etc.

What the Counselling and Mental Health Service will expect from you

The Counselling and Mental Health Service expects students and graduates to:

  • Keep appointments and booked events, and to let us know in advance if unable to do so.

  • Register with a GP, preferably in Dundee. This is to allow for liaison with students’ GP if necessary and appropriate.

The Counselling and Mental Health Service is committed to confidentiality

Paper and electronic records include your contact details and the initial request for Counselling and Mental Health services.  The records kept may include any letter or referral from academic staff or from your GP or other medical adviser.  The Service is required to keep notes of each session you attend as well as your clinical questionnaire data.  Information is held confidentially for 7 years after your last appointment with the Counselling Service, in accordance with applicable data protection legislation and requirements of the professional body for Counsellors (British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy). 

Counselling records are held securely and confidentially within the University’s Counselling Service.   The Counselling Service will not disclose your information to any third party, unless required to do so by law or where a risk of harm to you or another person exists.  This may include disclosure of a crime or suicidal intention.  In some cases, we can contact third parties at your request if it is deemed necessary.  You can formally request to access your personal data by speaking to your counsellor or by contacting the Counselling Service.

Our counsellors are all members of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) and subscribe to its ethical framework (www.bacp.co.uk).The Mental Health Advisor is a member of the Nursing and Midwifery Council. 

Feedback and complaints

Feedback, including compliments and complaints, reviewed where appropriate, at a counselling and mental health team meeting. Complaints should initially be passed to the Manager of the Counselling & Mental Health Service or Student Services Manager. Unresolved complaints will be referred to the Director of Student Services.
