Saskia Franken

Saskia Franken from Kamen in Germany will be graduating with a BSc (Hons) Forensic Science

Why Abertay?

I worked for Customs before I came to University and realised it wasn’t what I wanted to do, so it was time for a change. I chose Abertay because of its location, the fact that the course is accredited and the knowledge of the staff as well as professionals from industry. I’ve also really enjoyed working with students from all over the world and I’ve made friends from all over – Greece, Italy, Finland and obviously loads of Scots. You just learn so much from different cultures, it’s amazing.

What are your plans for the future?

I have secured a place on a Masters course at the University of Central Lancashire in Preston for an MSc in DNA profiling. I’m looking for a flat the week after Graduation so it’s a busy time! I will miss Dundee and Abertay, particularly my walk up the Law.

Life is too short to be stuck in a job that is not your dream.

Tell us a bit about your final year project.

I was looking at the amount of DNA that could be extracted from cartridges after they been fired by an automatic gun. For this, I got help from the police in Germany who did the shooting part of the project.

What's something few people know about you?

I decided to go to University later in life following a serious injury. I realised that life is too short to be stuck in a job that is not your dream. Life could be over tomorrow, so do what you want to do.

Have you got any advice for current students?

Enjoy your time as much as possible. If you're entering third year after summer, think about a project that you would like for your dissertation.
