The Blind God: Visually impaired accessibility and representation in FPS Deckbuilder gameplay

'The Blind God: Visually impaired accessibility and representation in FPS Deckbuilder gameplay' is a 2023 Digital Graduate Show project by Nikola Drousie, a Games Design and Production student at Abertay University.

Synopsis

The Blind God is a video game developed as part of a team. It is a single-player first-person shooter game developed in Unity in which you will protect a shrine from waves of enemies. It has light deckbuilding mechanics in the form of an eyeball collection that you create over time, each eye giving you a visual impairment (simulated on the screen), as well as a boon granted by the blind god. The greater the impairment, the greater the boon. The research focuses on making a game that is playable for both players with and without sigh loss, and on using gameplay to raise awareness and improve representation of visual impairments. The game genres were chosen as they are usually less accessible for players with sight loss (shooters and deckbuilders), and the first-person camera was chosen to be able to simulate visual impairments.

Project Motivation

I've always had a great interest in merging gameplay mechanics of different genres, and have always had an idea about making a game where eyes were the core theme. This project just allowed me to do both while developing my UX, gameplay, and technical design skills.
