I work at Ubisoft Montreal, the studio responsible for games like Assassin’s Creed, Far Cry, Watch Dogs, Child of Light and Rainbow Six. As Graphic Design Director: I define, develop and direct visual identities for AAA video games, ranging from art direction to graphic design, branding, UI, UX and marketing.
Recently, I directed the visual look of Far Cry 4 and am currently working on a number of things at Ubisoft that I will be able to speak about soon. It was a real honour to be included in this year’s Forbes 30 under 30 list. I guess the most noticeable impact it’s had is the exposure, but more importantly, it’s being able to inspire other artists to keep working hard and to keep pursuing their careers.
It was instrumental. From graduating at Abertay to becoming Ubisoft’s youngest director in the space of two and a half years, everything I knew about working in teams, leadership, planning, presenting my work and giving direction was picked up from my experience at Abertay.
I still have plenty of ties to Dundee. Even though I live over 3000 miles away now, I find myself coming back to Abertay. I love returning to Dundee when I can, meeting students and doing what I can to help them pursue their own careers.
Find the path that is right for you, do what you love and the rest will fall into place.Liam Wong | Ubisoft | Art Designer
Outside of my day job, I picked up photography and my work has since been featured by Adobe, CNN, Canon, Saatchi and Smithsonian.
The game that had the most influence on me was Metal Gear Solid. I was amazed at the art and design of the game and was fortunate enough to meet with the creator, Hideo Kojima, when I was in Tokyo and took his picture.
Find the path that is right for you, do what you love and the rest will fall into place. Figure out what excites you, motivates you and be proactive on improving on those things every single day.
There’s no such thing as talent, it’s all about mileage. Dundee is full of opportunities, make the most of them and get in touch if I can help in any way.
