Tell me about your job, and what it involves? 

I’m a UX Designer at King, working on casual mobile games. I try to make our games as enjoyable and accessible to as many people as possible by any means necessary! 

This means conducting research on our users, working with game designers to figure out how new features will affect the eventual user experience and creating mockups, prototypes and UI art to articulate those designs. 

It’s a role that involves a little bit of everything. The most important aspect is truly caring about the people playing our games, and helping the team make things our players will love. 

How did you end up in that role?

I was contacted out of the blue! Before I returned to Abertay in 2014, I had worked as a texture artist, UI artist and UX designer, and this work was visible online. 

I got an out-of-the blue email from the art director of this studio, offering me an interview. I’d lived in Copenhagen, so I knew I liked this part of the world! I handed in my Honours project on the Friday and started work in Malmö on the Monday morning. 

You spent time working for Microsoft, what was that like?

It was great. It’s a huge company so every part of it is very different. I worked in what at the time was a small studio – 80-ish people. 

We had the chance to work with HoloLens AR before it was shown to the public, which was pretty cool, and I met some great people there. 

While you were at 4J Studios you had the chance to work on Minecraft, incorporating franchises like Mass Effect and Skyrim.

How did it feel to get to do that at that stage of your career? 

It was my first games role so I had no idea what to expect. At the time our art team was tiny - four people in the old Vis building off Perth Road. The role taught me so much and was an amazing way to start my career - there was a lot of learning. I was a bit of an idiot at times! The Head of Art, Dave Keningale, really taught me a lot. It was a very friendly environment.

How did your time at Abertay help you get to where you are now? 

One of the best things about Abertay is being surrounded by people who have the same motivations and drive as you. Purely by being in Dundee, where everyone in the games industry knows each other, means if you stand out and put the work in, there are ways to get your foot in the door. I think that’s really special. 

Did anyone at the University have a particular impact on you?

Lynn Parker and Iain Donald both helped me through tough times and decisions - I’m forever in their debt. 

Do you have any advice for our current students? 

Get your work out there and be humble. No job is too small - everyone starts somewhere - but keep your dreams big. 

What are your future aspirations? 

Ship a game (harder than it sounds…) and finish my board game (easier than it sounds…)
