I’m an HR & OD Partner and have been in post for 7.5 years.
I completed a postgraduate diploma in HRM at Robert Gordon University following an undergraduate degree at Aberdeen, mainly because they were offering funded places! I was also interested in HR because of the variety within the profession and the opportunities to specialise. Before coming to Abertay, I studied and lived in Aberdeen for a number of years when the oil and gas industry was fairly buoyant however, unlike many of my fellow students, I never ventured into that industry. I have no regrets about it though as I don’t think I would have had the variety of experiences I have had during my career.
I find it reasonably difficult to switch off work mode, but I have a small child and spending time with him it’s a great way to relax after a busy day. Luckily I haven’t had to take a lot of time off to deal with caring responsibilities but I am able to be flexible around start and finishing times to allow for pick- ups etc - the rest of the team are in a similar position and our line manager is flexible about this.
I also reduced my hours after returning from maternity leave, I went from full-time to three days then I increased this to four days once my son was a bit older.
A former line manager inspired me greatly for her ability to manage a full time, demanding career while raising children, and having a good work life balance. She was also a very good leader of people, and although we have very different styles her ability to deal with anything that she faced inspired me. She also gave me a lot of confidence early on in my career.
Things get easier the more you do it. Also don’t be worried about doing the less exciting tasks - those are the things that help people be more rounded individuals with a good understanding of all aspects of the role.
